The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking to hire a highly motivated Research Scientist to work in its microscopy core facility. The Research Scientist will serve as members of the IGB Core Facility staff with a focus on biological sample preparation, managing a variety of confocal microscopes, and will engage in training, support, and collaboration with various local and regional users on active research projects.

The primary responsibility of this position is to train users on a variety of fluorescent, electron and X-Ray instruments housed in the core facilities.


  • Support Core researches on other instruments
  • Provide quality training to fluorescence microscope users
  • Work with researches to plan experiments and develop protocols
  • Maintain Optical microscopes



  • Required: Master’s in Physical Science
  • Preferred: Ph.D. in Physical Science


  • Required: Ability to work with Ph.D. level Scientist in a courteous professional manner
  • Preferred: Four Years’ experience in optical microscopy

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Required: ability to train scientist to use state of the art scientific imaging instrumentation

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Appointment Status: Full-time, 12-month academic professional appointment at the IGB. Qualified individuals will be eligible to receive vacation, sick, and personal leave; retirement through the State Universities Retirement System; and group health, dental, vision and life insurance.
